Each group should complete and submit the following 4 work products:
Presentations should last 2 to 3 minutes, and contain 2 elements: an overview and a separate advertisement or infomercial. The overview identifies the invention by name, discusses the problem it seeks to address, describes the invention's unique features, and explains how the invention solves the problem. The advertisement/infomercial promotes your product by engaging the audience, and explaining the invention's virtues. Be creative and use your best entrepreneurial skills to promote your invention.

Assignment #6: Summer Assignment Mini-Project & Presentations
Working in your assigned group, you will prepare and deliver a 3 to 4 minute oral presentation which:
Your presentations should use 3 to 5 Google slides in addition to a separate title page. Exercise care in designing your slides so that they are not text-heavy, yet are sufficiently informative and engaging to communicate your key points.
All group members should contribute equally in the creation and delivery of the presentation. You may use note cards to assist you during the presentation.
Due Dates: Presentations will begin (and hopefully conclude) on Friday, September 8th. Class work time will be provided on Wednesday, September 6th, but additional work outside the classroom will be required to produce a high-quality product.

- Summarizes 4 to 5 main ideas from your papers;
- Discusses why the issue(s) is significant and explains why you selected it;
- States your personal views on the issue(s); and
- Poses 2 thought-provoking questions based on your research.

Read and annotate the handout entitled Who “Invented” Geography? (attached below). Then, respond to the following in well-developed paragraphs:
- What was new and distinctive about the way in which the Greeks approached the study of geography and other scientific disciplines?
- Describe the major contributions made by the 3 great ancient Greek geographers Eratosthenes, Strabo, and Ptolemy.
- What were some of most significant theories advanced by the ancient Greek geographers regarding the earth, its shape, and its place in the universe?
- Explain how Eratosthenes estimated the circumference of the earth. Use a diagram to assist you.
- Why are maps oriented with north at the top? Why were some early European maps oriented with east at the top? How should maps be oriented?
- How did Ptolemy’s error regarding the earth’s circumference influence Christopher Columbus’ explorations?

Study for the Blank Page Map Quiz. This quiz will require you draw the outline shapes of the 7 continents on a blank sheet of paper, and to label the continents as well as the 5 oceans. You will also be required to draw and label the Equator, the Prime Meridian, and a compass rose.

Part 1. Geography Review. Read and study the attached excerpts from the textbook Patterns of Interaction as well as the maps of the continents, oceans and seas. Also, view the short youtube video below which explains the concepts of latitude and longitude. (The URL is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swKBi6hHHMA if there is difficulty in transmission). Then respond to the following.
1. Define absolute and relative location. What is the difference between these concepts? What are San Francisco's absolute and relative locations. (Your response should be recorded on a separate piece of paper.)
2. Locate and label the following on the blank global map distributed in class.
Medians of Longitude; Parallels of Latitude; Equator; Prime Meridian; Scale; Compass Rose.
The 7 Continents (Asia, Europe, N. America, S. America, Oceania, Africa & Antarctica).
The 5 Oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, & Southern (Antarctic)).
The 5 Major Seas (Mediterranean, Black, Red, South China, & Caribbean).
An additional blank global outline map is attached to assist you in completing this homework and studying for the quiz.
Part 2. Quiz. A quiz covering the geographic terms and concepts listed in 2 above will be held on Thursday, August 24th. In addition to labeling a blank global map, you should be prepared to identify the absolute locations (i.e., the longitude and latitude) of several specific locations on the map. Remember, absolute location is always reported in the following format (Latitude, Longitude) (i.e., Distance North or South of the Equator measured in degrees, Distance East or West of the Prime Meridian measured in degrees).
